Barbara Bestor in Silver Lake

Barbara Bestor, a Silver Lake architect, is Sci-Arc trained and inspired by the grit and grunge of LA’s eastside and the modernist icons of architecture Rudolph Schindler, Gregory Ain and Richard Neutra who created some of the best architectural experiments in the hills of Silver Lake and the surrounding areas. She’s committed to pushing the modernist’s edge and the use of mass-produced materials in her work. She has said,’” I like to build out of things that aren’t pretending to be something else.” Most of her clients have been artists and cost was a serious consideration. She has accomplished high design at a low cost.

She is also the author of Bohemian Modern/Living in Silver Lake and is committed to the community and it’s lifestyle. Silver Lake was reminiscent of New York’s East Village, “it was sort of a little punk rock, a little gay, a little grungy, all these mixed things but it had this really beautiful topography and natural resources.” Her office is situated on Fountain Avenue in Silver Lake in a red triangle shaped building amid auto repair & body shops covered with large graphics and the word Hair leftover from the old tenant, a hair salon.

When Barbara moved back to Los Angeles from the East Coast, her first project was a home for herself and her 2 daughters in the hills of Echo Park (a Silver Lake adjacent community.) She created her modernist dream of outdoor & indoor living. She has said, that, “she aspires to continue in the tradition of low key experimental modernism.” For her clients in Echo Park an artist and filmmaker Bestor designed a 1650sq.ft hillside home with office and studio using modest materials exposed concrete, unpainted cement board and plywood paneling. She used inexpensive storefront windows and doors and created a series of rolling walls in the garage and upstairs sleeping quarters to provide flexible spaces. She exposed wood studs, batt insulation and floor joists that are usually hidden. She has recently completed six new projects. In addition to her home in Los Feliz pictured above. She has accomplished a difficult feat as one of the few women architects running her own practice.
